The Metropolis Action Team held their first meeting with community stakeholders on 6/14/13 at the Metropolis/DCFS Field Office via in person and teleconference. The community stakeholders include: Tara Wallace/State’s Attorney for Hardin County, Melissa Presser/State’s Attorney for Pope County, Patrick Windhorst/State’s Attorney for Massac County, Rita Gower/Guardian Family Services, Bonnie Tebelak/Hope Unlimited, Yvonne Rath/Massac County Mental Health, Sherrie Crab/Family Counseling, Mandy Moore/Southern Seven Headstart, and Chad Brown/Illinois State Police.
The community stakeholders, in light of data(Child Abuse and Neglect Statistics, Fiscal year 2012) showing increase sex abuse reports for Hardin, Johnson, Massac and Pope counties, which are higher than Statewide reports, decided to focus on educating the community regarding sex abuse –how to prevent sex abuse and how to respond when it happens.
The Metropolis Action Team will initiate an education campaign regarding sex abuse, how to prevent it and how to respond when it happens. The Metropolis Action Team made a decision to meet quarterly at the 6/14/13 gathering; and to meet at Hope Unlimited who is a community stakeholder. The next meeting was held on 9/13/13 with continued focus on sex abuse. The next quarterly meeting is scheduled for 12/12/13, 10:00 – 12:00 pm at Hope Unlimited.
